Getting America to Work Applauds Senate Decision on Transit Parity Legislation
Senate Finance Committee Leadership includes Transit Benefit Provision in Draft Tax Extenders Bill
Washington D.C. (April 1, 2014) - The Getting America to Work coalition applauds the decision by the Senate Finance Committee leadership to include transit parity in the draft tax extenders legislation released today. Maintaining fair and equal benefits for transit riders is critical for the millions of commuters who rely on public transportation. Increased transit ridership lowers gas consumption and reduces roadway congestion, reducing commuting times for both drivers and those who choose public transportation to get to work.
Equal benefits for transit commuters expired at the beginning of this year, reducing the maximum benefit to $125 per month, while the maximum parking benefit rose to $250 per month. As a result, out-of-pocket commuting costs for more than 2.7 million American families potentially doubled overnight.
