House Votes on Bill to Fund Transit, National Coalition Calls for Longer Term Solution

Washington D.C. (July 15, 2014) - The House today voted on a bill to fix the Highway Trust Fund shortfall by raising $11 billion to continue funding the current federal transportation law, MAP-21, to May 2015. Getting America to Work (GATW), a national coalition dedicated to bringing America’s public transit systems into a state of good repair, applauded the House vote as a first step towards a longer term funding solution.
“We have a responsibility to ensure that riders have access to safe, reliable and functional transportation infrastructure, and the House vote is a step in the right direction,” says Stephen F. Lalli, Oklahoma Transit Association executive director and Getting America to Work Advisory Board member. "The Highway Trust’s Fund’s current funding levels and mechanism are not sustainable, and must be addressed before our systems fall into further disrepair, potentially leading to a much less efficient system.”
Getting America to Work is a broad coalition of commuters, officials and transportation agencies that support vital investments in public transit. The coalition focuses on advocating for the capital funding necessary to bring all of America’s public transit systems into a state of good repair. This investment will preserve and create the jobs and economic development transit supports.
